At Kingsway we are very much aware of the growing need to support more sustainable modes of transport to, from and around the business park, which will limit the negative impact on the environment and reduce congestion. A Transport Task Group has been established and a Kingsway Transport Co-ordinator appointed and is working in role to ensure such transport needs and plans are met for Kingsway. Our aim is:
“To implement measures within and around Kingsway so that the majority of employees have the opportunity to get to work by sustainable modes of transport, thereby encouraging a better quality of life for employers, employees and surrounding residents, improving the environment and enhancing the local economy.”
In order to put this vision into action it is intended that the following provisions will be made:
Metrolink – Kingsway Station
Metrolink is the UK's premier light rail network operating throughout Greater Manchester. It offers fast frequent services accessible to all, running 7 days a week, 364 days of the year. The provision of Metrolink to Rochdale will include a dedicated stop to the north of Kingsway Business Park.
It is planned to build a transport hub around the Kingsway Metrolink Station in order to coordinate bus and Metrolink services to provide people working on or visiting Kingsway with fully integrated public transport options. A character area will be created with local facilities including bus, taxi, and cycle provision.
Shuttle buses
Kingsway Shuttle Buses will be available for use by all employees on the Business Park and will run direct from the bus station, initially every 30 minutes. There will also be 2 Demand Responsive Transport buses running during peak hours for employees arriving by train or for those living near to the site but not on a major bus route.
Rochdale enjoys direct bus links into Manchester city centre and superb links around the borough. The nearest mainline train station to Kingsway is located near Rochdale town centre just a short 7 minute drive away, which links to the rest of Greater Manchester and beyond.
Car Sharing, Cycling, Walking and other Initiatives
The Kingsway Transport Coordinator will work with Kingsway businesses and employees to encourage sustainable travel such as car sharing schemes, park and ride schemes, cycling and walking to work.
Other projects the Transport Coordinator will work on to reduce the negative impact on the environment include facilitating working from home, flexitime and employing local labour.
The Travel Coordinator will be implementing schemes such as bicycle user groups and will be responsible for achieving the demanding targets set out in the Kingsway Sustainable Travel Plan.
Kingsway has made provisions to have onsite facilities (i.e. newsagent, sandwich bar, dry cleaners, cash dispenser, gym, crèche, hairdresser, post office, medical centre, etc), to reduce the need for people to travel off site during their working day.
